About Moonlight Chinchillas
My name is Fiona and I've owned chinchillas since 1996 and have been breeding "Pet quality" chinchillas since 1998. Previously based in Surrey, Moonlight Chinchillas can now be found near Chelmsford in Essex. I breed primarily from Standards and Wilson whites although I occasionally have other colours available. In the past few years I have changed
successfully compete with a small number of chinchillas and don't see that there are any benefits for me or my chinchillas that can be gained by increasing the size of my breeding programme.

the aims of my breeding programme from purely pet chinchillas to concentrate on producing healthy pedigree chinchillas from some of the UK's best lines. By doing this I am able to breed chinchillas that are not only fantastic pets but it also a high enough standard that they can be used to develop my heard and exhibit my chinchillas at champion level at National Chinchilla Society shows across the country competing with the UK's top breeders.
I only breed a small number of chinchillas each year, there are several reasons for this. Firstly, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find appropriate homes for chinchillas and secondly, there is a large number of chinchillas that are living in Chinchilla rescue centres across the UK. As I only breed from the best of my chinchillas I am still able to
if, in fact, they are suitable for breeding at all as some aren't. It is for this reason that at any one time I may have a mixture of pairs and polygamous trio setups, each with chins living happily and safely, in their particular environment. This may not be the most efficient way to breed show quality chins, but I do find it effective, additionally I feel that a happy chin is more likely to be a healthy chin, which at the end of the day is far more important than show results.
I regularly support my "local" rescue, R & J Chinchilla rescue - based in Northampton and donate 10% of the value of each chinchilla I sell to them to help them to continue the fantastic work they do supporting and caring for chinchillas in need.
